Chudakarana (Mundan): Why Hindu Babies Get Their First Haircut Ceremony

Many parents outside India have seen the mundan ceremony without knowing its formal name — a baby's head shaved clean, often at a temple, with family gathered around. That ceremony is Chudakarana.

What Chudakarana means

Performed in the first or third year, Chudakarana involves shaving the child's birth hair, reciting prayers and mantras, and often offering the hair to a river or temple. Symbolically, it's a cleansing — a release of the past and a fresh beginning, marked with new clothes for the occasion.

If a temple visit isn't practical
