Every culture has its own version of "the first day of school." In Hindu tradition, that day has a name and a ceremony: Vidyarambha.
What happens at Vidyarambha
Observed around the fifth year, the ceremony centers on a prayer to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge and learning. The child then writes their first letters — often "Om" or the alphabet — traced into rice or sand, and flowers are offered to books as a gesture of respect for learning itself.
A simple way to mark it
You don't need rice or sand for this to count. A short prayer before your child's actual first day of school, and a moment where they write a letter or their name for the "first" time with you watching, captures the spirit of Vidyarambha completely.
