What happens during Vivaha
At the center of the ceremony is Saptapadi, the seven sacred steps taken together before the sacred fire (Agni), each one representing a specific vow — for nourishment, strength, prosperity, happiness, family, longevity, and friendship. Garlands are exchanged, and the two families formally join as one.
Why the seven steps still matter
Modern weddings often keep the aesthetics of Vivaha — the fire, the garlands — without always explaining what each step is actually promising. Understanding the seven vows turns the ceremony from a beautiful tradition into a set of commitments a couple can actually return to over the years.
