Shri Krishna, who spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjun

Most of us know the Gita as Krishna's teaching to Arjun on the battlefield. But the book holds many surprises. Here are twelve true facts, with the verses in Sanskrit where they matter. Share one with your family this week.

1. The blind king speaks only one verse: the first

धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय. This is Bhagavad Gita 1.1.2

Dhritarashtra asks Sanjaya: what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do at Kurukshetra? After this one question, he never speaks again in the Gita.12

2. Krishna speaks 574 verses, Arjun 84

Some versions of the Mahabharata count the speakers. Krishna speaks 574 verses. Arjun speaks 84, Sanjaya 41 and Dhritarashtra just 1.1

Why it matters today: Arjun's 84 verses are mostly questions. The Gita shows that asking honest questions is part of dharma.

3. The whole Gita is a report

We hear the Gita through Sanjaya, the adviser of King Dhritarashtra. He tells the king what is happening on the battlefield. So every word of Krishna reaches us as Sanjaya's report.1

4. It is a small part of a much bigger book

The Gita is not a separate book. It sits inside the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. Depending on the edition, it is chapters 23 to 40 or 25 to 42 of that parva.1

5. It has 700 verses, but some old copies had more

The Gita has 18 chapters and 700 verses. That is the accepted count today. But some old manuscripts may have had 745 verses.1

Adi Shankaracharya wrote a commentary on the Gita in the 8th century. His commentary clearly states the 700-verse count.1

6. It reached English in 1785

In 1785, Charles Wilkins published an English translation in London. He called it the Bhagvat-geeta, or Dialogues of Krishna and Arjun. He is often described as the first person to translate the Gita into English.7

7. Oppenheimer remembered a line from chapter 11

कालोऽस्मि लोकक्षयकृत्प्रवृद्धो. This opens Bhagavad Gita 11.32. Krishna says: I am Time, the great destroyer of the worlds.5

After the first atomic bomb test in 1945, the scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer recalled a line from this verse: I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.1

8. Tilak wrote 400 pages on the Gita in pencil, in jail

Lokmanya Tilak was jailed in Mandalay, Burma, from 1908 to 1914. There he wrote the Gita Rahasya in Marathi, in pencil. The manuscript ran past 400 pages. He finished it in under four months.6

It was published in 1915. Its main idea: the Gita teaches selfless action, not running away from action.6

9. The most famous verse is about effort, not results

कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि. This is Bhagavad Gita 2.47.4

Meaning: you have a right to do your duty, but not to the fruits of your action. Do not work only for results. And do not give up doing your duty.4

10. The Gita has its own birthday

Gita Jayanti falls on Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, the same day as Mokshada Ekadashi. It is believed Krishna spoke the Gita at Kurukshetra on this day. In 2026, it falls on 20 December in India.8

Tip: the date can differ by a day outside India, so check your local panchang.8

11. Kurukshetra still celebrates it

Around Gita Jayanti, Kurukshetra usually holds the International Gita Mahotsav. It has Gita recitation, aarti at the Brahma Sarovar and cultural programmes.8

12. The Gita truly begins when Arjun says: I am your student

Arjun, Krishna's student in the Gita
Arjun, Krishna's student in the Gita

शिष्यस्तेऽहं शाधि मां त्वां प्रपन्नम्. This line is from Bhagavad Gita 2.7.3

Arjun says he is confused about his duty. He asks Krishna to tell him what is truly best. Then he says: I am your disciple, I surrender to you, please teach me.3

Why it matters today: the greatest teaching starts only when a strong man admits he is lost. Every child can learn that it is brave to ask for help.
